What to do on Valentine’s day?

Most of the time coming up with a great gift idea or a
romantic get away can be difficult.  The time required to plan and
actually go on vacation can be a stretch on your time and your
significant other’s. Thinking outside the box of chocolates can help
give a unique and memorable gift that your spouse or significant other
will always remember, keeping you out of the dog house.

A normal gift certificate to his or her favorite store is
thoughtful but standard. However, a gift certificate for a new kitchen
or bathroom is WOW! Not only does he or she select their new dream
kitchen or bathroom it adds value to your home. You can set the budget
and one of our designers will help maximize it. The person will not
only enjoy the new area once completed but also have the enjoyment of
selecting the perfect finishes.

A new kitchen or bath will be something they remember
every time they enter that room. So when you are perplexed finding
that perfect gift for someone who has everything think about a
renovation project.

New Light for a New Year

If you have recently done work in your home and are starting to get used to it there are ways to “relight” the way you look at it. Most of the time you can spice up your décor by adding back-splashes or a new couch, but what happens when you’ve done those things? Did you remember one of the most important aspects, actually seeing your upgrades?

Lighting can take a dull room and highlight the features you have spent hard earned money on. For instance, the beautiful glass backsplash you installed in your kitchen. Can you actually see it at night or is overshadowed by your upper cabinets? Under-cabinet lighting accentuates your backsplash and can create emphasis on it or the counters; all while providing you an excellent light source for cooking and even a great night light for midnight snacks. Another simple addition is a new lamp, which can either be a focal point or set the mood of a room.

Taking the idea a step further, albeit more complex, you can reinvent the lighting you have installed in your home. Track-lighting is useful and can help highlight or provide the light where you need it, but the off-white or bulky aluminum fixtures are seldom attractive and fit your style unless you still enjoy mid-80’s décor. Companies have been reinventing the track-light by adding style to the equation. From modern to elegant, newer lighting fixtures will take away the eyesore and add new life or light to a room.

However, if track-lighting is not you idea of style, don’t be afraid to take a light fixture you would normally find in your dinning room to other rooms. Chandeliers can really add an interest in a kitchen or living room. The only drawback is the reduction in light output. However, by adding recessed lighting, most light output can be regained. Although more work to put in, recessed lighting can be planned out to give light were needed and really make your lighting plan functional. Smaller lights above your couch or chair where you read can make the absence of a lamp seem unimportant and not be seen when the switch is off.

So whether you are attempting to highlight your home’s best feature or renovating, make sure you address lighting. It will highlight and make you feel better about the money you have invested in your home.

Before and After

As you begin to finalize your list of remodel projects you plan to tackle this year, I hope seeing before and after pictures of this Estes Park, Colorado home will inspire you.

These mountain dwellers had lived in a home boasting Victorian architecture and beautiful views…but an early nineties aesthetic riddled with pink and brass.  The homeowners wanted to capture their outdoor scenic getaway and bring it indoors.

The question they brought to me was, “How do you marry Victorian architecture with rustic, Colorado style?”

The Victorians painted everything and loved color, so I asked the homeowners to consider painted cabinetry for all of their vanities, but made it feel “Colorado” with the addition of glaze, rub through and distressing over knotty cherry.  To my delight, they agreed to this “design risk”–and it turned out beautifully.

We also encountered a scenario that called for being fixed during the remodel.  The client’s laundry room had simple cabinetry and a cantilevered laminate top with large garbage cans tucked underneath it for laundry sorting.  I encouraged the homeowners to add this to their project scope, and outfitted the room with concealed laundry hampers, fresh cabinetry, and a beautiful new laminate top.  A beautiful “wood” tile floor blended seamlessly with the hardwood just outside of this room, but contributed function to a potentially wet area.

Perhaps a whole house remodel isn’t in the cards this year, but how about tackling that oft-used dated powder bath or making your master bath the beautiful retreat you’ve been pining for this year?

As you begin dreaming up your remodel, take a look at some of our past projects here.

A Product You Won’t Wear Out

Feast your eyes.

Anytime fashion and interior design join forces, creativity takes on a whole new look. (Sometimes the rules even get broken, which is very exciting). I recently discovered TING, a London and Los Angeles based design company that transforms hand-picked vintage leather belts into fabulous floor coverings. Manufacturing floor tiles and area rugs, TING also produces bags, seat cushions and wall panels, and I imagine their practical and sustainable visions for reusing leather won’t stop at that. At some point, someone probably said that belts could not be floors; I’m glad it’s been proven true and beautiful that they certainly can be. I’d venture to guess a floor composed of such loveliness would cost you about a billion dollars, but let’s not talk about price… let’s just start collecting belts.

January has been all about taking a look at “something new.” It’s exciting to peer into the creative minds of companys–such as TING–who value pushing the boundaries in product design (and know how to put vintage leather to good use).

Something New to Sit On

"Curve Your Enthusiasm" - Caracole

When I saw this new sofa from Caracole, I simply could not curve my enthusiasm. Contrasting nailheads and the soft pale ale wood finish nod to an industrial style; warm upholstery and a delicate frame reflect the Victorian era. The way in which the curvelinear form teams up with boxy seat cushions and pillows allows me to visualize the piece in both traditional and contemporary settings. Set on a plush area rug under a chandelier dripping with crystals? Absolutely. Resting on a polished concrete floor with a salvaged wood coffee table? Certainly.

“Curve Your Enthusiasm” by Caracole is 78.25″ wide, 41.75″ deep and 45.5″ high. Clear a space! We found something new for you to sit on.

Something New: Solarmax

Welcome the New Year! I am ready for a new beginning, fresh new adventures, ideas, designs and design materials in this years blog.

We have a new carpet on our showroom floor that with this 60 degree weather (yes, in January) and Colorado’s bright and hot wonderful sun – you might just be thankful you have Solarmax.

Solarmax is a new technology that Stainmaster has introduced as fade resistant. With west and south facing windows, your carpet has potential to fade. Use this analogy…most carpets are a like a radish – the fiber is only colored on the outside, so the inside is still white. Allowing the fiber to fade and lose its original color.

Carpet with Solormax Technology makes the fiber more like a carrot – so the color is dyed the whole way through. Might seem to be funny to compare your carpet to food – but it makes sense!

With all the other benefits of Stainmaster; stain, soil, texture retention plus Solarmax – this carpets benefits are hard to beat!

Come take a look at our new carpets already coming out this year and return for more NEW things for 2012!

Cork Mosaics

Choosing the right tile to fit your style and installation needs can be difficult. Outside of visual cues most tile does not vary in performance and benefit. However, when looking, cork is another option that adds not only a fun look but many advantages over traditional materials of porcelain or ceramic. Yes, cork; a natural, green product that can be used in many applications!

Actual cork slices are taken and  set on a mesh mosaic, grouted, and sealed to provide a water tight surface. The installation is very similar to that of tile. However, instead of a cold surface you have an insulator that will keep your floor at 70 degrees year round. The benefits of using a natural product such as cork are endless. It is a renewable resource making it green, it has naturally anti-allergenic, the cork is softer than tile to give a little cushion without flexing, and it provides sound deadening. If the natural finish is not your taste you can stain it to suit your needs.

Josh, Scott, Missy, Emily, Brian, Cassie, Sarah, Ken, Petra, Brad sporting their ugly Christmas sweaters.

Twas just days before Christmas
When I took the time
To sit down and write you
This short “Thank You” rhyme.

The power tools were whining
A short time ago.
When would all this end?
You wanted to know.

When we started the tear out
It caused you distress,
But the beautiful finish
Was worth all the mess.

Thanks for your patience
And your business this year.
Hope your holiday is filled
To the brim with good cheer.
